Wipro Bio Attack
The Bengaluru office of Wipro received an anonymous email threat on Saturday, warning biological attack at several campuses of the IT giant. The miscreants have demanded Wipro to submit Rs 500 crore in bitcoins at a specific portal mentioned in the email. An FIR has been registered by the Bengaluru police’s cyber cell under section 66(F) of the IT Act.
The sender in the email has promised to use vicin, a toxic biological substance, to attack the campuses of Wipro in Bengaluru. In the email, the miscreant has vowed to use vicin in the cafeteria or the toilet seats to cause maximum damage, if his demands are not met by May 25. The sender has further promised to send 2 grams vicin sample to the Wipro office, in order to validate his threat.
Security has been beefed up across all campuses of Wipro in Bengaluru. In the official statement issued by the company, it assured all employees of enhanced safety at all Wipro workplaces. “Wipro has augmented security measures at all its office locations. There is no impact on the company’s operations,” it said.
“Wipro confirms that it has filed a complaint with the local law enforcement authorities after receiving a threatening letter from an unidentified source. We have no further comments as the investigation is ongoing,” the company further added.
The cyber cell of city police is attempting to trace the originating location of the email. The possibility of the case being one of hoax threat has not been ruled out. “We will have to explore and find out whether these are genuine are not,” ACP S Ravi reportedly said.
