Vijayawada airport upgraded to an international airport by Union Cabinet
The Vijayawada airport which has been serving Andhra Pradesh has been upgraded to the status of an international airport on Wednesday. The decision which was taken by the Union Cabinet, was already on the cards, as it was under one of the provisions of the Andhra Reorganisation Act of 2014.
Prior to the splitting of the state of Andhra Pradesh and creation of Telangana, the Hyderabad airport served as the international airport for the state. However, when the bifurcation took place, Hyderabad fell under Telengana and hence, the airport also went to them. This created major problems for Andhra Pradesh and now finally with today’s decision, this issue has been addressed.
According to the Andhra Reorganisation Act, 2014, which bifurcated consolidated Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and the remaining part of Andhra Pradesh, it was provided that the Centre must examine the feasibility of expanding a series of airports to international standards and thereon take a decision with speed. The airports named under this were Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati airports.
Reportedly, a new transit terminal building of the Vijayawada airport was inaugurated earlier this year by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
