Tamil Nadu farmers protesting at Jantar Mantar to drink urine today, vow to eat human faeces if govt ignores demands

To draw attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government, Tamil Nadu farmers will drink urine in protest at Delhi’s iconic Janatar Mantar today. Agitating farmers, who have come from Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu’s of Cauvery belt, said their will drink urine if the government ignores their demand. They also vowed to eat human faeces on Sunday if the government did not pay heed to their demands. Farmers have been protesting for over a month in unique and bizarre way to grab attention of the government.
“We are not getting water to drink in Tamil Nadu, and PM Narendra Modi has been ignoring our thirst. So, we will have to quench our thirst with our own urine,” P Iyyakkannu, the state president of the National South-Indian Rivers Linking Farmers Association who is leading the protest.
Tamil Nadu farmers have been demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore, farm loan waiver and setting up of Cauvery Management Board by the Centre. The drought-hit farmers have been protesting in Delhi adorning human skulls around their necks, trying to grab the attention of the authorities towards their condition. On April 10, a group of agitating farmers stripped near South Block in the national capital to press for their demands.
In a temporary relief to protesting farmers of Tamil Nadu, Madras High Court last week ordered state government to waive off loans acquired by all sections of farmers in cooperative societies. The central government also released Rs 1,447.99 crore to Tamil Nadu as financial assistance for drought relief.
