Lasith Malinga becomes first bowler to take 150 wickets in Indian Premier League
IPL 150 wickets
Mumbai Indians Lasith Malinga became the first bowler in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to take 150 wickets. The fast bowler reached the milestone during Mumbai Indians match against Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.
Right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer was Malinga’s 150th IPL victim. Apparently, the Sri Lankan great leads the all-time wickets tally in IPL followed by leg-spinner Amit Mishra (133 wickets) who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Malinga has featured in 105 IPL matches and has been associated with Mumbai Indians since 2009 season, his only IPL franchise. He missed the 2008 season following a knee injury. The fast bowler finished as the highest wicket-taker during the 2011 season, picking 28 wickets.
Ahead of 2014 auction Malinga was one of the five players retained by Mumbai Indians, the others being Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh and Ambati Rayudu. Malinga over the years has been a boon for Mumbai Indians. He is not only known for his death bowling speciality but bowling valuable spells up front as well.
Malinga was instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ title triumph in 2013 and 2015 taking 20 and 24 wickets respectively.
Due to his knee injury, the speedster missed last season. This year Malinga has featured in seven games thus far for MI and has picked eight wickets.
