The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded music director Gangai Amaran to contest for the bypoll of RK Nagar assembly constituency. Late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa represented the RK Nagar assembly and the bypoll in the constituency will be conducted on April 12. With Gangai Amaran contesting the election. a five-cornered battle is been contested between TTV Dhinakaran of Sasikala faction, Marudha Ganesh of DMK, Madhusudhanan of O Panneerselvam faction, Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar and Gangai Amaran of BJP.
Gangai Amaran hails from a family associated with the Communist Party of India. He is the brother of famous music composer Ilayaraja and Amaran along with actor-choreographer Gayathri Raghuram joined BJP in January 2014.
It was speculated that in the bypoll elections, the BJP may nominate state president Tamilisai Soundararajan or actress Gowthami to contest from the seat but the party’s election cell secretary JP Nadda on Friday announced Gangai Amaran to contest from the seat. Gangai Amaran was a witness in the disproportionate assets case against former chief minister Jayalalithaa, VK Sasikala and four others and he has also famously accused Sasikala of grabbing his farmhouse for merely 13.1 lakh rupees.
Amaran, in his statement to the Court, stated that Bhaskaran, son of Sasikala’s sister took him to meet Jayalalithaa in Poes Garden. Sasikala during the meet stated that the chief minister visited the Payyanur land and is interested in buying it. Amaran did not want to sell the house but after the continuous visit by Sudhakaran, he decided to sell it. For the 22-acre farmhouse, Amaran received two demand drafts worth Rs 13.1 lakh.
The RK Nagar bypoll was declared by the Election Commission on March 9.
